Over then seven-hundred migrants rescued in yesterday operations in the Mediterranean Sea. When I got to the port of Palermo was 7 am. I heard that the coastguard’s petrol vessel Dattilo was on its way carrying over 700 migrants who were rescued at sea.
Unfortunately twelve people lost their life, two were the parents of a little girl. Many women and children were among the rescued migrants. The Italian Red Cross, the IOM-OIM, the UNHCR and local organisations were ready to receive the survivors.
By the time people started to disembark from the ship, the sun was up in the sky and very hot. Doctors, volunteers, police forces and local authorities were present at the dock, working relentlessly during the relief operation.
While the EU is busy dealing with Greece and other financial issues, tragedies keep shaking the Mediterranean Sea. These photos are dedicated to the survivors and to the dead, to the doctors, to the Coast Guard, to the Organisations involved, to the police forces and to the dozens of volunteers.
